Five days a week, Jared Stephens can be found at ZOOZ Fitness, training clients of all ages and abilities with a passion that is both personal and professional. For Jared, fitness isn’t just about movement—it’s about transforming lives and building community.
As a child, Jared struggled with asthma and turned to fitness as a way to improve his health. Over time, it became much more than that—it was a tool for managing stress, building confidence, and finding his place in the world.
“I became an athlete,” Jared says. “I played basketball, volleyball, and other sports. I found peace and built confidence through movement and challenging myself.”
Determined to turn his passion into a career, Jared pursued a degree in Kinesiology and Exercise Science at California State University, Northridge (CSUN). It was there that he enrolled in an adaptive exercise class and began interning at ZOOZ Fitness, a moment he describes as life-changing.
“Even though I had volunteered with people with disabilities as a teen, working with them through fitness was something new,” Jared recalls. “It opened my eyes to the impact fitness could have on their lives. It wasn’t just about physical activity—it was about making a real difference.”
Jared interned at ZOOZ for four months before joining the team full-time three years ago. His dedication and creativity quickly set him apart, and a year ago, he was promoted to Fitness Director. In this role, Jared continues to train clients and lead group classes while overseeing trainers and ensuring every athlete’s needs are met.
“I’m passionate about helping people improve their quality of life, especially individuals with physical and neurological disabilities,” Jared says. “Everyone deserves the opportunity to grow, and it’s rewarding to adapt fitness routines to meet people where they are.”
Jared credits ZOOZ founder Jake Weiner for creating an inclusive space where athletes of all abilities can thrive. “Jake did something truly special, and I’m grateful he saw potential in me and gave me the chance to be part of it.”
Jake praised Jared as a phenomenal addition to ZOOZ, citing his energy, passion for fitness, and the meaningful connections he’s built with ZOOZ athletes.
“Jared has an innate ability to understand each athlete’s unique needs and meets them where they are, creating an inclusive and supportive environment that embodies ZOOZ’s mission,” Jake explained. “He isn’t just an exceptional coach—he’s a true leader. Jared has introduced innovative ideas, inspired his peers, and challenged all of us to think bigger. His initiative and dedication extend far beyond the gym—he’s shaping the culture of ZOOZ in ways that reflect his deep belief in fitness as a tool for transformation.
Jared hasn’t just helped ZOOZ grow—he’s helped define who we are. His work has laid the foundation for the future of our community.”
Jared’s work at ZOOZ has led to countless success stories, but one stands out in particular. Early in his tenure, he worked with a young autistic man who struggled with focus and regulation. Initially, their 45-minute sessions were tumultuous to get through. However, Jared’s dedication and perseverance paid off.
“Now, two years later, he’s thriving,” Jared says proudly. “He’s learned how to jump, run, push a sled, and even work on penmanship and writing. Seeing his progress—both physically and emotionally—is incredibly rewarding.”
The need for accessible fitness opportunities is significant. According to the CDC, 47% of adults with disabilities who are able to engage in physical activity do not get any aerobic exercise, compared to 26% of adults without disabilities. Barriers include inaccessible facilities, financial constraints, and misconceptions about what people with disabilities can achieve.
ZOOZ Fitness is breaking down these barriers, one athlete at a time. “We see people from all walks of life, often moving for the first time,” Jared says. “To help them build confidence and a foundation for better physical and mental health is special. Working here isn’t just a job—it’s an incredible and rewarding experience.”
Through Jared’s leadership and the team’s dedication, ZOOZ Fitness continues to redefine what’s possible for people with disabilities, proving that fitness truly is for everyone.
